Evansville Area Surprised by Winter Weather
If you’re anything like me, I went to bed Sunday night with no real thoughts about the next day above and beyond the normal expectations. There were no weather alerts, no talk of winter storms, no salt on the roads, anything!
I awoke Monday morning to what I thought was a lite dusting of snow over everything. The main road (Watson Drive in Henderson Kentucky) was clear. I walked on the snow itself as I took the garbage out before leaving for work; I had normal traction and no slick spots.
I took off for Princeton Indiana and the roads seemed perfectly normal. Bridge traffic was light, but it normally is at 5:30 in the morning. As I was coming off the north bound bridge over the Ohio River, I suddenly lost control of my vehicle! I was tail-spinning to the left, and there was nothing I could do but turn into the spin and tap the breaks. I went off the road and came to a stop with my passenger side rear wheel up in the air. Unhurt, I called 911, and waited for the authorities and a tow to show up.
Where that snow and ice disappeared by mid afternoon Monday, weather forecasters predict that the Tri-State area will be hit again by winter storms starting Wednesday night where rain turns to snow. That means the wet roads will freeze and will be covered by a light layer of snow. This weather is supposed to last through next Monday, January 21st.
To be prepared for the icy road conditions be sure to check the following
- Tire tread - If you must, get your tires rotated to be ready. Every bit of traction you can get is a good thing.
- Go to bed early and get up early - If you must travel to work in the early morning hours, go to bed about an hour early and get up an hour early. Don’t rush yourself getting to work.
- Buckle Up - It’s the law, sure, but also it could prevent injury should you be in an accident.
- Keep An Extra Set of Dry Clothes and Boots in the Car - after getting out of my car, I stomped around in the frozen mud and snow. By the time I got home, my feet were seriously cold. Keep atleast some dry socks and an extra set of boots in the car to change into (or out of) if you get out of the car.
Everyone get ready! It’s going to be another fun day on the roads Thursday morning.

Oh, I remember those days. The last winter before I moved from Belleville IL, we had a big ice storm … and didn’t melt for almost 3 weeks. Luckily I had a 4-wheel drive truck.
Glad to hear you weren’t hurt in your accident.
Be careful on Thursday … although looking at the forecast charts, good chance the worst of the bad weather will be south of you.
Keep havin FuN!
Todd
Good tips, that black ice can wreak havoc. It is good that you were not hurt.
We’ve had a pretty mild winter so far. I think this weekend we’re really in for it.
The car took a few dings, but beyond the trunk not closing all the way, it works fine.
Thanks for the warm thoughts, it could have been much worse if I was in-front of a semi…
I loved how I lrft a half hour earlier for work and still didn’t make it to work on time.
I think I was actually 3 hours late to work that monday. 1.5 of that was waiting for the sheriff and the wrecker to pull me out.
I found your blog by accident but am glad I did
Great! Welcome!
