The Eyes of the Democratic Party Focus on Indiana
It shouldn’t have come to this. Obama had the nomination sown up, and Clinton was the automatic winner before him. The way the Presidential primaries work in the United States, the larger, more “important” states get to pick who will run for president, while the rest of the nation gets to mearly confirm their choice; states like Indiana and Kentucky don’t really get a real choice in the matter. Usually, there’s only 1 candidate left per political party in the race by the time those two states’ primaries come into play.
Not so with the Democratic Primary of 2008.
Obama and Clinton Forced to Campagn in Indiana
I know for a fact that both Clinton and Obama thought they would be kicking it back on a relaxed schedule, taking pot-shots at McCain while gearing up for the general election. The voters didn’t see it that way. Obama has won the majority of states while Clinton has won the larger states. You could NOT pay me enough to be a super delegate for the Democratic party.
What Is a Super Delegate’s Job?
It’s more of a responsibility than a job for the super delegate. The Democratic party super delegate is in the position to overrule the will of the people and vote for whomever they choose. Their responsibility lies with the party, not the people, in that they are to vote for who would be more “electable” come the Fall election.
What’s a Super Delegate to Do?
Looking strictly at the states won and the numbers, if a super delegate is to vote for the most “electable” candidate, then it should be Clinton. She’s got the numbers needed for the electoral college. Because California normally goes to the Democrats by default, the Republicans MUST clean up with almost a 2/3’s majority of states. If you go by that, then Obama could possibly work, as he’s cleaned Clinton’s clock in those smaller states.
Pity Howard Dean
Howard Dean will have to take the role he did not want, the bad guy. Right now the Democratic party is destroying itself with this extended primary season. Over 300 super delegates are sitting on the sidelines watching the bloodbath, waiting to say who they’ll vote for. From a purely democratic process, that’s how it should be; but the position of the super delegate was created to stop this specific set of circumstances from happening. Howard Dean has already called for super delegates to make their choices and make them publicly; time is needed for the party to heal and unite if they stand any chance of beating John McCain come November. Voter exit polls are showing democrats are very polarized. If their chosen candidate does not make it to November, low percentages (10-15%) say that they could possibly switch sides and vote for McCain. Just as damaging, higher percentages (mid 20’s to low 30’s) say they would just stay home.
In this Democratic primary, with neither Clinton or Obama willing to blink in this extended game of chicken, it is up to the super delegates to do their job.

United States of Amerika
Betr.: Shame of you!!!
Guten Tag,
Shame of you!!!
I am with Obama….I am with Obama….I am with Obama….I am with Obama
It is time for a new generation of leadership in our United States of Amerika.
Hi,
It looks like Obama has now wrapped it up … and his narrower than expected loss in Indiana certainly contributed to his success.
I’m looking forward to the fall campaigns. I’m one of those squishy Independent moderates. To be honest, even though their positions on many issues are miles apart, I really do like both candidates, and think that each would bring some pretty impressive qualities to the job of President.
At this point, I can’t see how you don’t give the edge to Obama though … if you’re playing the “association game”, a couple of recent polls have shown that being tied to President Bush is likely to cost more votes, than being tied to Rev Wright.
Just my opinion of course,
Todd
